TO THE GLORY OF GOD. NEWCASTLE UNITED & THE GREAT WAR
A wonderful historical account of an important era of the club’s past is now published, To The Glory of God: Newcastle United & The Great War, compiled by Club Historian Paul Joannou. With the end of the centenary anniversary of World War One in 2018, it’s fitting that Newcastle United’s involvement in the conflict is told. It was a hugely challenging time for both the club and its players, and sadly no fewer than 23 footballers to have pulled on the black-and-white shirt lost their lives as a result of the conflict.

When the Great War began during 1914 Newcastle United were the country’s foremost club, having enjoyed a period of much success during the Edwardian era. In that difficult period of conflict during the years to follow more than 160 players and officials connected with the Magpies served in the armed services with many more engaged in essential work.
How the famous Black’n’Whites coped with those years of conflict is related in comprehensive detail. Stars of the football field found themselves all over the world facing the enemy; on the Western Front, in the Middle East, Turkey and Greece, in India and Russia. They faced death countless times and several won gallantry honours, the Victoria Cross included. The famous served alongside the not so famous and several players were wounded, some recovered and never played again, others returned to the game, even winning the FA Cup with United.
The Journal: “another meticulously researched book from club historian Paul Joannou”
Evening Chronicle: “unveils layer upon layer of some of the harrowing tales and revelations from Gallowgate of yesteryear”…“a book that takes you through the blood, sweat and tears of war and football and it’s a story that really engages the mind”

The book is a gem and is published in a limited edition so United fans should not miss getting a copy.
